Letter from the Board

Post by Admin on Tue Feb 17, 2015 8:10 pm

Dear EAZWV member,

Our association is 19 years old this year.
During this time it has grown and developed enormously, and for this reason, we now feel that it is time to update our constitution to represent the current needs of the membership and to reflect the key focus areas of our future work as identified in the master planning exercise conducted between 2013-2015 and led by Christian Wenker.

The main changes we are proposing are as follows:
  • Our key focus areas, as identified in the master planning exercise are clearly represented in the Association’s stated aims, objectives and means. Our association’s potential to  contribute to improving the welfare and conservation of wildlife is also made more explicit.
  • The definitions of working groups and sections are clarified.
o Sections represent membership groups with special regional or disciplinary interests. It is proposed that the student body become a section.
o Working groups are convened to undertake the key strategic work of the organization and will have specific objectives to undertake on behalf of the Association.
o Both will have representation on the advisory board.
  • Provision is made for the appointment of an Executive Director. The need for this position was agreed by the membership at the General Assembly in Warsaw in 2014. The proposed changes allow for this new post within the constitution.
  • Membership categories are defined more clearly.
  • Student members, now a substantial proportion of our membership, are given voting rights after two years of membership. This now puts them on a level footing with our retired members.
  • Duties of the board positions and executive director have been reviewed and are more clearly defined.

We feel that these changes represent the feedback that we have received from you, the membership, over the last couple of years and we hope you will agree that they help clarify our Associations aims and reflect our growing professional standards.

We would like to invite you all to read the proposed revised constitution in preparation for a vote on its adoption at the next General Assembly in Barcelona on May 16th, 2015.

The current constitution and proposed updated version are available on our website and this forum. Our current login for the website is Username: eazwv2014, Password: jaguar

To facilitate discussion, we have also set up this online discussion forum. Please use this to ask any questions you have about this proposal. We, the board will then post our responses (roughly weekly) so that all the membership can benefit from the points you raise. We hope this will assist with objective decision-making. This forum will be open from 20th February to 10th April 2015.

Your views are very important in developing our Association for the future. If you cannot attend the General Assembly yourself, you can send your vote (to be received no later than 14th May 2015) directly to the secretary Hugo Fernández Bellon.

Either by email:

Or by post:
Hugo Fernández
Parc Zoològic de Barcelona Parc de la Ciutadella s/n 08003  Barcelona

Voting forms will be available on the EAZWV website member area by 14th April 2015.

We thank you for your continued support and valuable contribution to the Association.

Sincerely on behalf of the EAZWV board,

Stephanie  Sanderson (President  EAZWV)
Hanspeter  Steinmetz (Vice-President EAZWV)
